Rolfing Structural Integration promotes well being by enhancing the pattern of organization in the body. It is named after Dr. Ida P. Rolf, who invented this system of soft tissue (myofascial system) manipulation and movement education which balances the body in gravity and improves ease and efficiency in movement. The central idea of Rolfing is called the Rolf Line. It is analogous to the vertical center pole in a cone shaped tent. When a body is organized around the Rolf Line, gravity works with the body rather than against it.
Rolfing training begins with a ten session series developed by Dr. Rolf, and several variations of this protocol are taught. Because Rolfers work with the deep myofascial structures, the work can be experienced as uncomfortable. Rolfers have gradually developed a broad range of techniques that produce results with less discomfort for the client. Rolfing frees the shortened fascia, allowing your muscles to return to their natural length and to assist your body in releasing compensatory patterns. As this happens, your body returns to a more comfortable vertical alignment.
